Get on the right Wi-Fi band

You indicated that your device is normally connected to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band or that you’re unsure.

Did you know?

Selecting which Wi-Fi band to connect your device to impacts on the internet performance of your device.

  • It’s worthwhile to consider which Wi-Fi band to connect your device to.

Choose the optimal Wi-Fi band.

  • The Wi-Fi band you connect to can have a big effect on the strength of your signal. In the wi-fi menu on your device you may see two networks that you can choose from:
    • [MyNetwork]_2.4G
    • [MyNetwork]_5G

These networks signify that your modem supports two Wi-Fi bands, which each operate on separate frequencies (2.4GHz and 5GHz). When connecting to your Wi- Fi network, it’s best to choose the 5G network first, assuming your device recognises this as an option. Some newer modems will automatically select the best network for you. There are a handful of notable differences between each frequency:

  • Many modern modem/routers will switch between Wi-Fi bands automatically depending on your device’s connection strength at any point in time, but this is not the case for all.
